A gilt bronze box with an exquisite hand-painted ivory portrait miniature of Napoleon II, known as “l’Aiglon” (the Little Eagle), set into the lid. He is shown as a young man in the white uniform of the Austrian military with a green collar, a poignant detail, as Napoleon’s only legitimate son was raised at the Austrian court after his father’s exile, given the title Duke of Reichstadt, and died of tuberculosis at just 21. The box itself is finely engraved with neoclassical banding. A tribute to the tragic heir who never ruled. Purchased from Galeries de Souzy, Paris, 2000. Approximately 4 inches in diameter.
