French, 1860-1940.
Maurice Levis received his formal art training in France under Harpignies, P. Billet, and Jules Lefebvre. He was active in the Academy from 1886 and became a member of Les Artistes Français in 1888. He received numerous awards from the Academy, including a Medaille d’Or in 1927. He lived in France during the rise of French Impressionism. Levis was devoted to the study of landscapes and often derived much of his vision from the Impressionist style, which can be seen in his loose brush strokes and choice of color.
